Burgruine Eppenstein
Burgruine Eppenstein is a medieval spur castle ruin in Styria, Austria, standing above the village of Eppenstein on a steep limestone crag. Built around 1000 AD as the seat of the Eppenstein dynasty, it was rebuilt in Gothic form in the late 15th century and later fell into decay. Today the roofless masonry tops a wooded ridge and is a visible landmark above the surrounding valley.

Perched on a steep, jagged limestone pinnacle, the castle appears as a compact medieval fortress whose main enclosure crowns the rock and a lower outer curtain runs along the shoulder of the hill. Stonework is pale-grey local masonry; the summit is dominated by a high enclosed keep and continuous curtain with crenellated parapets and narrow vertical window slits. Roofs, timber ranges and battlement walkways were intact in the prime, surrounded by dense conifer forest and high alpine ridgelines.

Eppenstein was built about 1000 AD as the ancestral seat of the Eppenstein dynasty, documented as Margraves of Styria from around 970 and enfeoffed with the Duchy of Carinthia in the 11th and 12th centuries — Margrave Adalbero was elevated to Duke of Carinthia by King Henry II of Germany in 1012. The castrum itself is first named in a deed of 1160.
When the Eppensteins died out with Duke Henry III of Carinthia in 1122, their allodial lands passed to Margrave Ottokar II of Styria and his descendants. Ottokar later took the castle — with two others — as ransom for releasing Herrand von Wildonie, whom he had held imprisoned for six months at Veveří Castle. After Ottokar's defeat and death against Rudolf I at the 1278 Battle on the Marchfeld, the fortress passed through many hands.
Later holders were Habsburg ministeriales such as the von Graben family, and the castle was rebuilt in Gothic style around 1478. It then fell into decay, and its roofless masonry now tops a steep limestone crag on a wooded ridge above the village of Eppenstein, a landmark visible across the surrounding Styrian valley.
