Old Grodno Castle

The Old Grodno Castle is a historic fortress and former royal residence in Grodno, Belarus, built on a hill at the confluence of the Neman and Gorodnichanka rivers. Its complex contains multiple towers and a richly decorated entrance and today functions as a historical and archaeological museum following recent restorations. The site preserves a mix of medieval, Renaissance and later architectural layers visible in its silhouette and facades.

The shape it held in its prime.

Perched on a grassy riverside mound, the castle presents long white plastered curtain walls rising from exposed rubble-stone foundations with stepped buttresses. A square tower with a steep red-tiled hip roof anchors one end; a broad, square tower with a decorative frieze supports a large bulbous onion dome at the main gate. The main entrance is an arched wooden door set in an ornate stone portal. A balustraded terrace runs along part of the roofline; windows are rectangular with stone surrounds.
