Built in the 11th century, it is one of the oldest and largest Moravian castles, its long curtain walls following the cliff edge around an inner ward with towers and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin.

The Lords of Bítov became owners of the castle and based themselves here for four centuries. Bítov later underwent Baroque remodelling, and gained its present Romantic re-Gothic appearance at the beginning of the 19th century, when it passed into the hands of the Counts of Daun.
