Château de Laval
The Château de Laval is a riverside castle in Laval, Mayenne, composed of an older medieval stronghold (Vieux-Château) and a later Renaissance gallery (Château-Neuf). The site occupies a rocky promontory above the Mayenne and retains a large cylindrical main tower with a wooden hoarding and an extended building with a very steep slate roof and Renaissance dormers.

Massive stone castle set on a rocky promontory above the river, dominated at the west end by a tall cylindrical keep capped by a conical slate roof and a dark wooden hoarding band; to the east a long rectangular range rises under an extremely steep slate roof pierced by regular small roof vents and several gabled dormer windows. Masonry is grey-brown rubble with dressed window surrounds; a Renaissance gallery and rows of ornate bays interrupt the medieval curtain walls; town houses sit at the base.

The Château de Laval was founded in the 10th century by Guy I, first of the House of Laval, and the castle's foundation allowed the birth of the city itself. Set on a rocky promontory above the Mayenne, it bears witness to the family's many alliances and to a power that grew from the 11th century until the house's disappearance at the end of the Renaissance.
The Vieux-Château preserves an 11th-century chapel and an imposing cylindrical main tower topped by a 13th-century wooden hoarding — an exceptional survival of medieval military architecture — alongside the richly worked bays of dwellings added in the early 16th century. Beside it stands the Château-Neuf, a Renaissance gallery of the 1540s converted into a courthouse in the 19th century. Both were among the first 1,034 French historical monuments classified in 1840.
The Old Castle served as a prison from the Revolution until 1911 and has been open to the public since the 1920s; since 1967 it has housed the Musée d'Art naïf et d'Arts singuliers de Laval. The Château-Neuf, vacated by the judicial services in the 2000s, awaits a new use.
