Château de Montpensier
The Château de Montpensier was a medieval motte-and-bailey fortress on a steep earthen mound in the commune of Montpensier, Puy-de-Dôme, France. It was occupied from at least the 11th century and was deliberately destroyed on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu in 1633.

Sited atop a pronounced earthen motte, the castle is arranged in concentric rings: a high rounded inner ward crowning the mound with a central circular donjon, encircled by a near-continuous curtain of stone and several cylindrical towers; beyond this rises an outer oval bailey with additional curtain walls and a fortified entrance/ barbican. The silhouette reads as stacked circular enclosures on a steep, isolated butte, with battlemented parapets and compact groupings of masonry buildings against the inner curtain.
