Augustusburg Hunting Lodge
The Jagdschloss Augustusburg is a Renaissance hunting lodge built 1568–1572 on the Schellenberg hill above the town of Augustusburg in Saxony. It presents a symmetrical white-plastered façade with pink sandstone detailing, steep slate roofs and a central clock tower, and today is preserved and used as a public site.

Broad, symmetrical three-storey Renaissance hunting lodge of 1572 with white lime-plastered walls and pink sandstone quoins and window surrounds, set on the wooded Schellenberg hill. The long principal façade features regularly spaced rectangular windows, a central rusticated arched entrance with pediment and a balustraded terrace above; a square clock tower rises from the roofline. Roofscape composed of steep dark-slate hipped and pyramidal roofs with small dormers and corner tower pavilions; stonework complete and intact in its prime.

Prince Elector Augustus of Saxony built the hunting lodge of Augustusburg between 1568 and 1572 on the Schellenberg hill above the town that now bears its name. It was more than a hunting seat: fresh from victory in the Grumbach Feud, in which he enforced the imperial ban on his Ernestine rivals, Augustus meant the palace to underline his leading position in Central Germany — and the thriving Saxon economy under Moritz and Augustus supplied the finance.
An older castle of the von Schellenberg family, built around 1210–30, stood on the same spot until Augustus's project; it had been granted to the House of Wettin in 1324 after the so-called Schellenberg Feud. Augustus's victory also brought him the districts of Weida, Ziegenrück and Arnshaugk.
The lodge presents a symmetrical white-plastered façade with pink sandstone detailing, steep slate roofs and a central clock tower. Visible from afar on the 516-metre Schellenberg at the northern edge of the Ore Mountains, it remains the local landmark — about twelve kilometres east of Chemnitz — and is preserved today as a public site.
