A small hilltop medieval fortress of pale grey ashlar and rubble stone: a rectangular tower fragment with a ground-level rounded-arch entrance stands attached to low, collapsed curtain walls that enclose an irregular courtyard of exposed foundations and earth. Roofs are absent and wall-tops are broken; the complex sits on a cleared terrace surrounded by dense oak and scrub woodland. Nearby the tiny borgo buildings and a small church occupy the enclosed cluster of structures.

Castiglion del Bosco sits in dense woodland on an elevated outlook in the Val d'Orcia, within the comune of Montalcino in the province of Siena. Part of the tower and walls erected by the Cacciaconti di Trequanda family at the beginning of the 13th century remain visible, alongside the small borgo church of San Michele.
In 1318 the estate was taken over by the Gallerani family, prosperous merchants who held public offices in Siena. Its modern life is in wine: Castiglion del Bosco produces Brunello di Montalcino and was one of the founders of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium. In March 2022 the estate began a new chapter with its transfer to an international family office.
