What Salvatierra Castle looked like in its prime.
Perched on a jagged limestone ridge at the foot of volcanic Mount Atalaya, the castle reads as a low, elongated curtain wall running along the rock with a single prominent square keep at the ridge's highest point. Masonry is pale grey, roughly coursed stone; the wall follows the rocky outcrop closely and is punctuated by narrow slit windows and battlemented parapets. The immediate setting is open scrub and agricultural plain below, the silhouette dominated by the tower above the cliffs.
Its story
The story of Salvatierra Castle.
Originally an Islamic building tentatively dated to the 11th or 12th century, Salvatierra stands on a small hillock at the foot of the volcanic Mount Atalaya, about five kilometres from Calzada de Calatrava in the south of the province of Ciudad Real. The castle passed to Christian control in the second half of the 12th century, returned to Muslim hands in 1195, and was conquered in 1197 by knights of the Order of Calatrava, who strengthened its defences.
In a later campaign, Christian forces passed over the place after taking the nearby castle of Calatrava, deciding not to besiege Salvatierra but to go directly to find the Almohad Caliph instead. The fortification survives today as a partial ruin.
