A compact cluster of white‑rendered stone buildings and tall rectangular towers with steep, dark slate roofs and numerous small dormer windows and chimneys. The façades show regularly spaced narrow, mostly upright windows, occasional projecting oriel/balcony features and slender pinnacles topped by weather‑vanes. The castle sits above a town slope with Lake Neuchâtel and low distant hills visible on the lakeward side; rooflines step and overlap to form a jagged silhouette.

Neuchâtel's castle stands on a rocky spur at the centre of the town, beside the collegiate church and overlooking the streets below. Its first written mention is a gift of 1011, when Rudolph III, last king of Burgundy, granted his wife Irmengarde "Novum Castellum, sedem regalissimam" — the new castle, a most royal residence — and archaeological and place-name studies agree the fortress had been built shortly before, probably by Rudolph himself to control the routes into his kingdom.
It began as a lordly residence set within a much larger fortification and was reworked again and again across the centuries. It has been the seat of regional power since the 11th century, its history inseparable from that of Neuchâtel's sovereigns, and it still houses the government and part of the administration of the Republic and Canton of Neuchâtel today.
