Sargans Castle
Sargans Castle sits above the town of Sargans in the Canton of St. Gallen and was the medieval seat of the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans. The hilltop fortress retains its large square bergfried and attached palas and today houses the Sarganserland museum.

Perched on a rocky outcrop, the castle is dominated by a tall, square bergfried with a steep, hipped tiled roof and narrow slit windows. Attached to the tower is a long palas with a similarly steep tile roof, plastered pale stone walls, small grouped windows with red shutters and a painted row of heraldic shields on the main façade. A low stone curtain wall follows the rock edge, enclosing a compact courtyard; the whole group is built of light beige/grey masonry with red-brown roof tiles.

Sargans Castle rises above its town in the Canton of St. Gallen and was the seat of the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans from the thirteenth century. The region had been part of the lands of the Counts of Bregenz from 982; when their male line died out in 1160, Count palatine Hugo of Tübingen inherited most of the territory through his wife Elisabeth.
Hartmann took up residence in the castle and probably expanded the palas. Over the following century the wealth and lands of the Werdenberg-Sargans were divided again and again between descendants, and by the late fourteenth century Count Johann I ruled a small, poor county under the Habsburgs — at the Battle of Näfels in 1388 he commanded a wing of the Austrian army that was supposed to cross the Kerenzerberg Pass.
The hilltop fortress keeps its large square bergfried and attached palas, and is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. Since 1899 it has been run by the local church, and it now houses the Sarganserland museum.
