'Descendant of Angelos' — angelos, 'messenger, angel' — with the Peloponnesian -opoulos. Also the name of the Angeloi, a Byzantine imperial dynasty.
The history of Angelopoulos
Angelos means the messenger, the angel, and as a given name it ran from the humble to the imperial — the Angeloi were a dynasty of Byzantine emperors. Angelopoulos sets it in the Peloponnesian -opoulos, and the film-maker Theo Angelopoulos, poet of the long slow shot, made it a name of world cinema.
