'Son of Fernando' — again with the Portuguese -es. From the Germanic Ferdinand, 'bold journey', the twin of the Spanish Fernández / Hernández.
The history of Fernandes
Fernandes is the Portuguese face of the king-name Fernando, formed like Rodrigues with the patronymic -es. It is among the commonest Portuguese surnames and, like its Castilian twin, a foundational name of the Atlantic diaspora — and one more of the old tree- and patronymic names the Sephardim carried out of Portugal after 1497.
