'Son of Gomes' or Gome — the Portuguese form of the old Iberian given name behind the Spanish Gómez, probably from a Gothic root for 'man'.
The history of Gomes
Gomes carries the same ancient Iberian given name as the Spanish Gómez, formed here with the Portuguese ending. An old and common patronymic, it travelled the colonial road into Brazil and the wider Lusophone world.
