'Son of Nils' — Nils being the Swedish Nicholas, worn down from Nikolaus. Distinct in spelling from the Norwegian Nilsen and Danish Nielsen, though the name behind all three is one.
The history of Nilsson
Nils was the Swedish Nicholas, and Nilsson its son — a top-rank patronymic whose spelling alone tells the Scandinavian hand: the double-s, -sson, is Sweden's, where Norway writes Nilsen and Denmark Nielsen. Selma Lagerlöf sent her shrunken hero Nils across Sweden on a goose, and gave the name to literature.
