Toponymic — from the river Sousa in the Douro country of northern Portugal, and the lands along it. The name of one of the oldest and greatest noble houses of the kingdom.
The history of Sousa
Sousa takes its name from the river Sousa and the northern lands it watered, and it became one of the supreme noble surnames of medieval Portugal — the House of Sousa stood among the first families of the realm. Carried to Brazil, it is usually spelled Souza there, the z marking the colonial branch as surely as a postmark.
