Othonian Athens, 1835
Athens in 1835 is a tiny, unruly capital in the first years of King Otto's reign: a village of a few thousand where ancient ruins, Ottoman houses and new Bavarian plans collide. The walk moves from the seaside approach past imperial arches into the rock and lanes around the Acropolis, where excavations, shepherds and itinerant travellers rub shoulders with lime and scaffolded building sites.
35 scenes — 22 streets, squares and views, 13 interiors to step inside. Planned from the Wikipedia record of Athens as it stood in 1835 (“History of Athens”).
