Walled Cork, 1600

Cork in 1600 is a compact, walled island town straddling two channels of the River Lee, its low skyline of church towers, merchant tower-houses and friary steeples crowded between quays and fortifications. The walk follows incoming ships, the drawbridges of the North and South Gates, the bustling riverside warehouses and the narrow main streets where merchants load hides, tallow and salted fish for Bristol and Spain.
