Salt and Painters' Hallstatt, 1850

Hallstatt in 1850 is a narrow salt village pressed between the Dachstein limestone and the Hallstätter See, still reachable only by boat or the high attic-path. The walk shows the working fabric of the place: stacked lakeside houses and boathouses, the market triangle and the parish church on its terrace, the wooden brine flume above the roofs, timbered mine mouths high on the Salzberg and the mills fed by the Mühlbach.
