Venetian Spalato, 1600
Spalato in 1600 is a Venetian maritime stronghold built inside the shell of Diocletian’s Roman palace, watched over by the cathedral campanile and newer Venetian walls. The walk moves from the Adriatic approach into the palace-quarter and out again to Marjan hill, showing harbour galleys, city squares with a clock and loggia, caravan traffic from the Ottoman hinterland, and houses grafted into ancient arcades.
