Eddystone Lighthouse

The Eddystone Lighthouse is the fourth lighthouse built on the Eddystone Rocks, sited offshore south of Rame Head, Cornwall. The present granite tower by James Douglass was completed and first lit in 1882 and remains an active rock lighthouse. It stands beside the truncated base (frustum) of Smeaton's earlier tower.

What Eddystone Lighthouse looked like in its prime.

A tapering cylindrical tower of coursed pale grey granite rising from a square cutoff plinth on a submerged rock; small vertical rows of narrow rectangular windows pierce the shaft. The tower is capped by a tall, red-painted lantern storey and iron gallery with heavy glazing; the lantern is a large multi-sided metal frame housing a two-tier first-order optic. The structure shows marine staining and a low, squat service base against open sea and sky.
