HMNB Portsmouth
His Majesty's Naval Base, Portsmouth is the Royal Navy's historic and operational dockyard and base on the eastern shore of Portsmouth Harbour. It combines active fleet berths, historic dry docks and workshops with the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard museum area housing vessels such as HMS Victory and the Mary Rose. The site remains a working naval base and public heritage destination.

The greatest industrial site of the Georgian world: stone dry docks and a great ship basin crowded with wooden ships of the line, their masts a forest above tiered gun decks. Long red-brick storehouses and a quarter-mile ropehouse flank cobbled yards stacked with timber, anchors and tar barrels; shipwrights swarm over a first-rate ship in dock while sawyers work in pits and horse teams haul knees of oak. Smoke rises from the new steam block mills, and marine sentries stand at the arched dockyard gates.
