Rungholt

Rungholt was a medieval Frisian settlement and administrative centre on the island of Strand, known from historical sources and repeated finds in the tidal flats. It was largely destroyed and submerged by the storm tide of January 1362. Archaeological investigations have mapped warfts, the foundations of a large brick church with tower and apse, wooden sluices and a harbour, and traces of houses, wells and drained fields now under the Wadden Sea.

What Rungholt looked like in its prime.

A low-lying medieval coastal town sited on a chain of grassy warfts rising a few metres above tidal flats. Roofs and walls of ordinary houses are built from turf/grass sod and timber; a larger brick church with a broad square tower and rounded apse stands on the highest mound. Woody quays, large oak timbers of a wooden sluice, narrow drainage channels and a two-metre earthen dyke frame fields of rye on raised beds, all set against flat mudflats and braided tidal channels.
