Vineta

Vineta is a legendary North Baltic emporium variously identified with the medieval trading settlement (Jumne/Julin/Jomsborg) at the mouth of the Dievenow on the island of Wollin. Sources and archaeology describe a dense early–medieval harbour town of wooden landing-bridges, market streets, workshops and adjacent burial mounds. The Vineta tradition also holds that the city was lost beneath the sea, which is why it appears in later legend as a sunken city.

A low, densely built riverside emporium of timber: rows of stilted and block-built wooden houses with steep thatch roofs, wattle-and-daub cottages, and storage sheds clustered along pile-built landing bridges and quays on the Dievenow estuary. Narrow dirt streets run behind the waterfront; workshops and open stalls back onto the houses. The town is fringed by an earthen burgwall and nearby burial mounds rise on sandy scarps above marshy gardens and reed-lined shallows of the Baltic inlet.
