What Aviano Air Base looked like in its prime.

A Great War Italian airfield on the Friulian plain: a broad mown grass flying field edged by rows of canvas Bessonneau hangars and low timber sheds, with the wall of the Dolomite foothills rising close behind. Huge three-engined Caproni biplane bombers stand on the grass, mechanics on ladders between their twin booms; fuel is pumped by hand from drums, canvas is patched on trestles, and officers in grey-green uniforms confer over maps on a trestle table by the field telephone hut.
