Burg Mauterndorf
Mauterndorf Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress in the municipality of Mauterndorf, Salzburg, Austria, set above the Radstädter Tauern pass. Its 13th-century keep and extensive 15th-century enlargements by the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg produced the compact white-plastered tower complex visible today. The state owns the castle and it now houses a regional museum and cultural events.

Mauterndorf Castle is a compact whitewashed hilltop complex of interconnected rectangular buildings and towers set on a stone base and low curtain wall. Two prominent square towers (one a tall bergfried with steep pyramidal roof, one lower with a broad hipped roof) and several smaller turreted projections punctuate a skyline of dark slate roofs. Thick rough limestone curtain walls with crenellated parapets enclose an inner ward; the castle sits on a grassy spur above the valley with steep forested mountains beyond.

A Roman fort of AD 326 or earlier stood on this site, protecting the mountain road from Teurnia over the Radstädter Tauern Pass to Iuvavum and housing the Roman administrator of Noricum, until it was destroyed in the Migration Period. The later castle was funded by a toll — Maut — collected on the nearby road, evidenced in a deed of Emperor Henry II from 1002, though the castle itself is not mentioned until 1253, when the keep was erected.
The fortress was held by the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg, who enlarged it significantly under archbishops Burkhard Weisbriach (1420/23–1466) and Leonhard von Keutschach. In the early 20th century the Göring family — among them the younger sons Hermann and Albert — frequently stayed at the castle as guests of its owner Epenstein. Since 1968 the building has belonged to the state of Salzburg, and a castle museum was established in 2003.
