Hochosterwitz Castle

Hochosterwitz Castle is a mediaeval hilltop rock castle in Carinthia, Austria, built on a 172-metre dolomite outcrop above the Zollfeld plain. The site features a stepped sequence of concentric curtain walls and fortified gatehouses leading to a compact residential citadel at the summit and has been held by the Khevenhüller family since the 16th century. Parts of the complex are open to the public seasonally.

The shape it held in its prime.

Perched on a steep dolomite crag, the castle presents a tiered profile of pale stone curtain walls and multiple gatehouses rising in succession up the slope. Dark slate conical and pyramidal roofs top several round and square towers; a tall pointed spire rises from the main residential block. Crenellated wall-walks, narrow defended passages and terraced greenery cling to the rock, and the main approach is a long, winding paved path cutting through successive fortified gates.
