Rosenburg Castle
Rosenburg is a cliff-top castle in Rosenburg-Mold, Lower Austria, notable for its large Renaissance rebuild and later 17th-century expansion. Perched above the valley of the River Kamp, it preserves a mix of medieval and Renaissance fabric and today houses a museum and staged historical events. The von Hoyos-Sprinzenstein family remain the owners.

Perched on a steep rocky crag above the Kamp valley, Rosenburg presents pale plastered curtain walls and a long, multi-level roofline punctuated by numerous round turrets with conical grey roofs and a taller square bergfried with a steep hipped roof. Façades show regularly spaced rectangular windows and several chimney stacks; a tall pointed Gothic chapel window is visible on an outer wall. A continuous arcaded gallery runs along inner ranges, and dense woodland frames the cliff below.

First recorded in 1175, the Rosenburg began as a 12th-century Romanesque castle on a cliff above the River Kamp; only some foundations of that first building survive in the base of the present keep. Hussite forces razed the Catholic castle in 1433, and in 1476 it was vastly extended in the then-popular Gothic style under Count Kaspar von Rogendorf, chamberlain of Emperor Frederick III — the chapel and outermost walls are the best-preserved work of this period.
After the expansion the Rosenburg served repeatedly as a stronghold of the Austrian armies in their struggle with Hungarian invaders. In 1487 the castle was sold to Jakob and Christoph Grabner of the lords Von Graben, whose descendants adopted the Protestant faith. Today it is one of Austria's most visited Renaissance castles, set within the Naturpark Kamptal, and the von Hoyos-Sprinzenstein family survive as its owners.
