Poeke Castle
Poeke Castle is a moated château near Poeke in the municipality of Aalter, East Flanders, set in a 56-hectare park. The present appearance dates largely from major 19th-century rebuilding and it is today owned by the municipality and used for cultural events.

Rectangular three-storey château of pale pink-beige ashlar with a symmetrical multi-bay façade, a central three-bay projecting block crowned by a triangular pediment with sculpted cartouche, and two cylindrical corner towers capped by conical slate roofs and tall ornate metal finials. A steep mansard roof punctuated by dormer windows tops rows of tall, white-framed mullioned windows on each floor. Foreground includes a balustraded terrace, formal parterre lawns, gravel path and a water-filled moat crossed by stone bridges; complete and well-maintained in 1875.

Poeke Castle stands surrounded by water in 56 hectares of park near Aalter in East Flanders, reached by bridges at the front and rear of the building. Its medieval lords, the lords of Poeke, were loyal vassals of the Counts of Flanders and intermarried with them, Anastasia van Oultre, second wife of Eulaard III of Poeke, took as her second husband Robert of Flanders, illegitimate son of Count Louis II. The castle played a prominent role in Louis II's conflict with the city of Ghent in 1382.
After Jan III of Poeke died in 1563 the lordship passed to the de Mastaing family, distant relatives of the lords of Poeke. Jean de Jauche, lord of Mastaing, sold it in 1588 to Philibert Delrye, whose son Christoffel sold it on in 1597 to Jean de Preudhomme of Lille; Charles Florent Idesbald de Preudhomme d'Hailly, Burgrave of Nieuwpoort and Baron of Poeke, carried out significant work on the castle between 1743 and 1752.
In 1872 Baron Victor Pycke de Peteghem, from Oudenaarde, bought the estates, and the family's last descendant, Baroness Ines Pycke de Peteghem, was the castle's last resident and owner. The present appearance dates largely from major 19th-century rebuilding; the castle is now owned by the municipality and used for cultural events.
