Ostrovica Castle is a large medieval fortress perched on a heavily wooded ridge above the village of Ostrovica near Kulen Vakuf, overlooking the left bank of the Una river. Built mainly in the 15th century on earlier foundations and substantially altered under Ottoman rule, it served as a regional military stronghold until abandonment in 1878 and is today a protected national monument within Una National Park.

Sitting atop a steep, tree-clad limestone ridge, Ostrovica is a long, roughly rectangular fortification (about 117 by 83 m) of pale local stone with low curtain walls broken by gaps and battered faces; two prominent rounded tower-ends anchor the length. The fortification follows the rocky crest, with entrances set on the south (main) and north (auxiliary) sides, roofless battlements and ramped approaches down heavily wooded slopes to the valley and the Una river.

Ostrovica Castle sits on a heavily wooded ridge above the left bank of the Una river near Kulen Vakuf, on a strategic site connecting the northern and southern parts of the Una valley. The medieval castle was most probably built in the 15th century on the foundations of an ancient fortification going back to Roman times or earlier; in the Middle Ages it belonged to the Kingdom of Croatia and its Lapac County.
The first mention comes in a charter of 1407, in which King Ladislaus of Naples confirmed Ostrovica to the Bosnian Grand Duke Sandalj Hranić, who had received it as a dowry on his marriage to Katarina Vuković; in 1409/10 Sandalj sold it, with Skradin, to Venice for 5,000 ducats. Later in the 15th century it was held by the Kurjaković family, Princes of Krbava, and afterwards by proprietors including Juraj Mikulčić, Ivan Keglević and members of the House of Frankopan.
Conquered by the Ottomans in 1523, the enlarged and reinforced fortress became the seat of the Old Ostrovica captaincy, long commanded by begs of the Kulenović family, one of the most prominent in Ottoman Bosnia. It served as a military stronghold until abandonment in 1878 and is today a protected national monument within Una National Park.
