A long attached residential range with a continuous red-tiled roof and exposed stone plinth runs from the tower, enclosing a modest cobbled inner courtyard reached through a central arched gatehouse. Mature trees and a slight rise place the castle above the nearby river confluence.

Silesian Ostrava Castle was built in 1290 by Duke Mieszko I of Cieszyn on the border between the Duchy of Cieszyn and Moravia, near the confluence of the Lučina and Ostravice rivers. In 1534 the Gothic castle was rebuilt as a Renaissance residence.

The castle burned down in 1872 and was subsequently rebuilt. Coal mining beneath it caused many years of dilapidation, repaired only in 2004; the restored castle hosted the Colours of Ostrava festival until 2012 and remains in use for cultural events.
