Kalø Castle
Kalø Castle is an early 14th-century Danish royal fortress ruin on a small island off eastern Jutland, built by King Erik Menved in 1313. The site is reached by a long cobbled embankment and features low outer ringwalls, earthwork mounds and the remains of a substantial brick keep; it later served as an administrative centre and state prison.

Set on a small island linked to the mainland by a long cobbled embankment, Kalø Slot is a compact fortress of red brick and rough fieldstone. A large multistorey rectangular brick keep dominates amid low outer ringwalls and scattered rubble mounds; the lower courses are uniform red brick while upper sections are rougher rubble. The sea frames the island, grassy interior courts and cobbled yards lie within earthwork moats, and the keep and curtain walls stood complete with roofs and parapets at the castle's prime.

Kalø Castle was built in 1313 by King Erik Menved on a small island off eastern Jutland, its outer ringwalls, fortifications and port of call raised by the forced labour of local peasants — with the stated goal of breaking their rebellious spirits. A long cobbled embankment still carries visitors out to the ruin, which lies within Mols Bjerge National Park, 20 kilometres from Aarhus.
The royal fortress served as an administrative centre and state prison. Its most famous inmate was the future Swedish king Gustav Vasa, held captive by Christian II in 1518–19 until he escaped and fled to Lübeck disguised as a common peasant.
In 1662 Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, Count of Laurvig, decided to tear the abandoned ruin down after receiving it from his father, Frederick III. The remains — earthwork mounds, low outer ringwalls and a substantial brick keep — are today owned and protected by the Danish state.
