What Nyborg Castle looked like in its prime.

Long rectangular silhouette of red-brown brick with a continuous steep orange-tile roof; at the eastern end a large round tower with a conical tiled roof and a decorative band of lighter brick under the parapet; a stepped gable at the same end; a smaller round/roofed tower at the west end; evenly spaced arched windows in the upper wall and a projecting half-timbered oriel on the south face. At prime the curtain wall and roof are complete and contiguous along the length.

Its story

The story of Nyborg Castle.

Nyborg Slot, on the Danish island of Funen, figures prominently in Danish history: it was here that King Eric V Klipping signed Denmark's first constitution in 1282, and the castle was the venue of the Danehof, the country's first parliament. Its long red-brick curtain wall carries several roofed towers and a pronounced stepped gable.

After restoration the rooms were fitted out with furniture acquired from various historic manor houses, and the castle is now operated as part of Østfyns Museer, together with Borgmestergården in Mads Lerches Gård in the town.
