Thetford Castle
Thetford Castle is a medieval motte-and-bailey castle sited on a very large artificial mound (motte) beside the town of Thetford in Norfolk. The 12th-century castle was partly slighted in 1173; the huge motte survives as an earthwork and forms part of a public park while the bailey area is now the town's Military Parade.

The shape it held in its prime.
A vast conical chalk motte some 19–22 metres high dominates the site, sunk into a deep surrounding ditch and with steep grassy slopes; on the summit would have stood a large timber keep and wooden palisade. A roughly rectangular bailey (about 105 by 95 m) stretches away from the motte, defined by earth banks and a surrounding ditch, with two sets of complex ramparts protecting the north side where older Iron Age banks are integrated into the defences.
