Kajaani Castle
Kajaani Castle is an early 17th-century granite fortress built on a small islet in the Kajaani River in present-day Finland. Constructed from 1604 and substantially completed under Per Brahe in the 1650s–1660s, it was destroyed by explosives in 1716 and today survives as roofless ruins on Linnansaari island.

The shape it held in its prime.
A compact rectangular granite fortress set on a small river islet, its thick curtain walls rising directly from the rapids; the plan is terminated by a half‑rounded (round) turret at each short end. By its prime the inner yard walls had been raised to the same height as the outer walls, enclosing stone service buildings within. The masonry is coarse local granite, with arched openings and passageways piercing the walls, and the whole sits amid fast-flowing water and riverside trees.
