The shape it held in its prime.
Massive pale limestone curtain walls form an extended rectangular fortress on a low hill within the town, pierced by projecting rounded towers and square wall-towers, with continuous battlemented parapets along the top. A wide grassy dry moat and sloping approaches lead up to stepped entrances; flags fly along the ramparts. At its prime the castle included a large square keep with round corner towers and a compact inner ward containing a ducal hall and a church.
