Château d'Usson
Château d'Usson is a medieval fortress in the Ariège département of southwestern France, traditionally counted among the Cathar castles. Perched on a rocky outcrop in the Pyrenean foothills above the Aude valley, the castle dates from the 11th century and served as a refuge during the Cathar period; it is listed as a monument historique.

Perched on a bare rocky outcrop at about 920 m above the Aude valley, the fortress is built of pale beige-grey rubble stone; a tall rectangular keep and several irregular towers rise from thick curtain walls that step down the slope. Large vertical breaches and arched voids interrupt the wallline in places; lower outer walls hug the bedrock. In its prime the walls and towers would have stood continuous with crenellated parapets enclosing an inner bailey overlooking the gorge.

The Château d'Usson — Castèl de So in Occitan — dates from the 11th century, perhaps earlier, and is counted among the so-called Cathar castles. Perched at 920 metres in the commune of Rouze, above the gorge of the Aude in the Pyrenean foothills, it marked the eastern boundary of the territories of the Counts of Foix during the Cathar period.
The seigneurs of Usson — Bernard d'Alion, lord of the Château de Montaillou, and his brother Arnaud d'Usson — sent arms and supplies to their besieged comrades. Like other seigneurial residences the castle was sold as communal property at the French Revolution, after which it was used as a stone quarry; the remains are listed as a monument historique.
