Château de Belcastel
Château de Belcastel is a medieval fortress perched above the north bank of the Aveyron in the village of Belcastel, Aveyron, France. Largely rebuilt in the 20th century from its ruined state, the castle sits above a cluster of stone village houses and terraced curtain walls with multiple towers.

Perched on a steep rocky spur above the valley, the castle presents a compact cluster of warm brown stone buildings: a tall square keep at the highest point flanked by several cylindrical towers, continuous terraced curtain walls descending the slope, and steeply pitched stone-tiled roofs on the lower service buildings. Ivy climbs parts of the walls; an arched gateway sits at the base where the fortress meets the village, which spills down the hillside in tight stone houses and narrow stairways.

The oldest part of the Château de Belcastel was constructed in the 9th century, and the castle grew in the hands of the Belcastel family; later, for many decades, it was the seat of the famed Saunhac family. It stands above the north bank of the Aveyron, downstream from Rodez, over a cluster of stone village houses.
Abandoned since at least the 17th century, the ruin was discovered in 1974 by the architect Fernand Pouillon, who undertook the reconstruction by hand with a dozen Algerian stonemasons and ten stained-glass experts — eight years of work, with no machines used. Pouillon also restored the village, now recognised as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, and the château remained his private residence until his death at Belcastel in 1986.
In 2005 the two owners of New York's AFA Gallery purchased the château and opened it to the public as both gallery and historical monument, adding medieval artefacts while leaving the fortress architecture undisturbed. Declared a historic monument in 1928, Belcastel is one of a group of 23 Aveyron castles joined in the tourist itinerary La Route des Seigneurs du Rouergue.
