A broad, rectangular château of pale limestone with a steep, dark slate roof pierced by regularly spaced dormer windows and several tall chimneys. Two large cylindrical corner towers with conical slate roofs and small cupola lanterns flank the principal forecourt; a low stone moat and retaining walls surround the entrance court. The left wing shows a ground‑floor arcade of round arches (Renaissance galleries) while the central three‑storey facade has symmetrically arranged windows and a carved stone main doorway. Set in a rolling, tree‑lined Burgundy valley.

The Château de Bussy-Rabutin, in Bussy-le-Grand in the Côte-d'Or, developed from a 12th-century castle and was remodelled through the 16th and 17th centuries. It is best known for the thousand portraits filling its galleries, amassed by Roger de Rabutin, Comte de Bussy (1618–1693), during his exile from the royal court.
Bussy fell into disgrace for allegedly taking part in an orgy at the Château de Roissy during Holy Week, and was ordered by Louis XIV to retire to his estates, where he passed the time composing his Histoire amoureuse des Gaules.
Restoration began in the 19th century under the comte de Sarcus, and the property was listed as a monument historique in 1862. Now state-managed and open to visitors, it has appeared as a location in historical films including The Gallant Lords of Bois-Doré and La reine et le cardinal.
