A stone-built medieval fortress whose defensive curtain walls trace an irregular pentagonal plan tightly hugging a rocky outcrop above the village. The compact cluster of enclosed buildings rises directly from the rock, producing an angular silhouette dominantly higher than the surrounding houses. Low rooflines and enclosed courtyards sit within the walls; the whole ensemble reads as a fortified pentagon perched on the crag, intact and occupied at its prime.

The Château de Castelnou — also called the Château Vicomtal — crowns a rocky outcrop above the village that took its name from it: the Latin castellum novum became the Catalan castell nou, the "new castle". Its irregular pentagonal curtain wall follows the shape of the rock, and from the early Middle Ages the site served as the viscountal administrative and military centre.
Sold to Viscount Satgé in 1875, the castle had become an elegant and habitable fortress again by 1900. In 1946 it was acquired by Charles-Emmanuel Brousse, whose wife Amy Elizabeth Thorpe was a famed spy for Britain's MI6 during the Second World War. A fire ravaged the château and killed Brousse in 1972; sold in 1987, it has since been restored.
