Château de Dieppe
The Château de Dieppe is a medieval castle overlooking the town and harbour of Dieppe in Normandy, France. Founded in the late 12th century and rebuilt in the 14th–15th centuries, it consists of a quadrangular stone enclosure with round flanking towers, a large west keep, and a lower adjacent court with a later brick bastion. Today the preserved castle houses the Dieppe museum and offers panoramic views over the town and coast.

A compact quadrangular stone castle sited on a grassy slope above town, built of pale grey flint and sandstone with areas of red brick for later additions. The silhouette is dominated by a large cylindrical west keep and several round flanking towers topped by conical tiled roofs; steep tiled rooflines rise from behind the curtain. The curtain walls show a corbelled machicolation band and crenellations, with a lower court and an arched stone bridge/viaduct connecting to the approach.

The Château de Dieppe was founded in 1188 by King Henry II of England and destroyed in 1195 by King Philip II of France. Restored in the 14th century, it was in large part reconstructed in 1433 by Charles des Marets: a quadrangular enclosure with round flanking towers and a lower adjacent court, the large west tower — perhaps 14th-century — serving as the keep, built in flint and sandstone with a brick bastion added later.
The town walls went up around 1360 and were extended between 1435 and 1442. When an Anglo-Dutch naval bombardment largely destroyed the town in 1694, the castle survived. It housed the Ruffin barracks until 1923, was bought by the town in 1903, and is now home to the Dieppe museum — with its collection of ivories, maritime exhibits, and the papers and belongings of Camille Saint-Saëns. It has been classed as a monument historique since 1862, with panoramic views over town and coast.
