The shape it held in its prime.

Long, low 17th‑century château with pale rendered stone walls and a very steep, stone‑tiled hipped roof punctured by small dormer windows and squat chimneys; the main block flanked by lower pavilion‑like ends. In front are formal terraces and tightly clipped boxwood parterres and alleys, many rounded topiary groups, set on a cliff edge with the Dordogne valley and wooded hills in the distance.

Its story

The story of Château de Marqueyssac (Vézac).

The Château de Marqueyssac was built at the end of the 17th century by Bertrand Vernet de Marqueyssac, Counsellor to King Louis XIV, on cliffs overlooking the Dordogne Valley at Vézac.

Its original jardin à la française was attributed to a pupil of André Le Nôtre, with terraces, alleys and a kitchen garden surrounding the château; the densely planted boxwood parterres for which Marqueyssac is now noted were developed in the 19th century, and the gardens remain the estate's chief fame.
