A Fief of Ribérac in the Fifteenth Century
La Mothe, also written Lamotte, began as a maison forte set along a watercourse in the west of what is now the commune of Saint Privat en Périgord, on the boundary between Périgord and the Angoumois and two kilometres from the Charente département. It served as a stronghold through the medieval wars. The earliest mentions of the château belong to the first quarter of the 15th century, when it was a fief dependent on the seigneury of Ribérac.
Montluc's Halt in the Wars of Religion
The house appears in the memoirs of Montluc, governor of Aquitaine, who broke his march at La Mothe with a body of troops during a Catholic offensive in the country around Aubeterre in the Wars of Religion.
Arlot, Belhade, La Cropte and Signac
The medieval defensive base was deeply remodelled in the 17th century, the period in which the present building was raised. The château passed in succession to the Arlot, Belhade, La Cropte and Signac families.
It is recorded in the general inventory of French cultural heritage. The park was undergoing rehabilitation in 2010, and the château and its outbuildings have been fitted out as gîtes.
