La Mothe began as a fortified house beside a watercourse on the border of Périgord and the Angoumois, a stronghold through the medieval wars; its earliest mentions date from the first quarter of the 15th century, when it was a fief of the seigneury of Ribérac. It appears in the memoirs of Montluc, governor of Aquitaine, who halted there with his troops during a Catholic offensive around Aubeterre in the Wars of Religion.
The medieval defensive base was deeply remodelled in the 17th century, when the present building rose: a central three-storey block flanked by two pavilions, set on a rectangular platform within a moat crossed by a bridge. It passed in succession through the Arlot, Belhade, La Cropte and Signac families.
