Château de Noirmoutier
The Château de Noirmoutier is a largely intact medieval castle on the Île de Noirmoutier in Vendée, France. Its central, almost 20-metre-high rectangular keep with corner towers dominates the castle ensemble; the keep now houses the Noirmoutier Museum.

A solid, rectangular three-storey keep of pale beige-grey rubble stone rises from a low, grassy lower courtyard on a flat coastal island; its corners are reinforced by rounded towers and small watch-turrets, with conical slate roofs visible above the parapet. A tall cylindrical stair turret with vertical cladding and a pointed conical roof projects from one face. Surrounding curtain walls and a raised stone rampart walkway enclose the courtyard and gate, all finished in the same rubble masonry.

The island was under the control of the barons of La Garnache when Pierre IV of La Garnache built the keep in the 12th century, followed by an enclosure equipped with towers around the lower courtyard. The solid rectangular keep, almost 20 metres high and built of rubble, held the lords' residence on its top floor, with numerous murder holes and defensive turrets at the corners.
In the 16th century the castle was held by the La Trémoille family, then viscounts of Thouars. It resisted numerous attacks, the English in 1342 and 1360, and again in 1386 under the command of the Earl of Arundel, then the Spanish in 1524 and 1588, but in 1674 it was taken by the Dutch troops of Admiral Cornelis Tromp. In 1720 it was sold to Louis IV Henri de Bourbon-Condé, who resold it to Louis XV in 1767.
At the beginning of the 18th century the towers were reconstructed and the keep adapted for artillery. Now the property of the commune, the château is listed as a monument historique and its keep houses the Noirmoutier Museum, a very well preserved example of 12th-century medieval architecture dominating the town of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île.
