What Château de Puymartin looked like in its prime.

Compact yellow-ochre limestone castle set behind a low dry-stone boundary wall and hedge, with a gravel approach lane; crenellated curtain walls step up to a steeply pitched, stone-tiled roofline. Two tall cylindrical towers with pronounced corbelled machicolation bands rise above the main block, each topped by high conical stone roofs with metal finials. A small square corner tower with its own conical roof projects from the curtain, and several narrow vertical windows and chimneys puncture the façades.

Its story

The story of Château de Puymartin.

The Château de Puymartin stands between Sarlat and Les Eyzies in the Dordogne, first built in the thirteenth century. War passed through it: the consuls of Sarlat bought the domain back from the English, but then abandoned the castle.

Later enlarged and restored — most extensively in the nineteenth century — Puymartin keeps a high-walled enceinte, a compact residential corps de logis and several prominent round towers under conical roofs, and is listed as a monument historique.
