Perched on a limestone outcrop above the Charente valley, the castle in its prime presented a tall cylindrical stone keep with a corbelled parapet and narrow arrow slits, and a system of multiple concentric curtain walls—one side backed directly onto sheer rock faces while the fourth side was defended by a triple wall. Pale grey limestone masonry, crenellated parapets along curved walls, a broad inner court and vaulted subterranean chambers cut into the bedrock completed the silhouette.

Its commanding strategic position made it the focus of much conflict throughout the medieval era: the castle featured in several episodes of the Saintonge War and the Hundred Years' War, and after a failed rebellion Henry II assigned Richard to bring the rebellious lords of Aquitaine to heel.
