A tall stone keep rises from the highest point, joined by a smaller round tower and two attached chapel blocks. Walls and towers are of grey volcanic stone; the site is set above steep grassy slopes and the Couze valley.

The castle became the property of the d'Estaing family when the sole heir, Jehanne de Murol, married Gaspard d'Estaing in the 15th century. Though Richelieu ordered the destruction of numerous castles and fortresses, Murol was spared thanks to the prestige of the d'Estaings and their influence at the French court. It survives today as a conserved ruin and tourist site.
