Saaleck Castle
Saaleck Castle is a 12th-century hill castle near Bad Kösen (now part of Naumburg) that overlooks the Saale river. The site is dominated by two round bergfrieds and was once enclosed by inner and outer defensive walls; it is today mostly ruined though the towers contain small exhibits. Saaleck is a stop on the tourist route Straße der Romanik.

Perched on a west-facing muschelkalk ridge above the Saale, the castle presents a roof-shaped spur crowned by two tall, round bergfrieds of light grey limestone ashlar with c. 2-metre-thick walls. The silhouette is dominated by these twin cylindrical towers rising from a terraced defensive platform about 23 metres high, surrounded originally by inner and outer curtain walls; the terrace edges show moats and ramparts on the narrow sides and neck ditches on the east side toward the neighbouring Rudelsburg.

Saaleck Castle was constructed in the 12th century on a roof-shaped muschelkalk ridge above the Saale, immediately south of the village of Saaleck near Bad Kösen, now part of Naumburg. Its silhouette is dominated by two round bergfrieds with walls about two metres thick, visible from far off; a medieval garderobe and stove in the west tower's masonry mark where the residential level once was.
The centre of the castle was once surrounded by inner and outer defensive walls, with the remains of several domestic buildings by the inner wall, moats and ramparts on the two narrow sides of the terrace, and further neck ditches guarding the spur facing the neighbouring Rudelsburg. Comparable castles with two round bergfrieds include Münzenberg, Hohandlau, Botenlaube and Thurant.
In 1922 two of the men who had killed Walther Rathenau, Germany's foreign minister, hid at Saaleck before being tracked down by the police; the Nazi regime later put up a memorial plaque at the castle and turned their grave in Saaleck cemetery into a heroes' shrine. The castle is now mostly ruined, though its towers hold small exhibits; it is a stop on the Straße der Romanik, and the Marzona Foundation, owner since 2018, is renovating the site with an approved grant of seven million euros from the German government.
