Castello di Caccamo
Castello di Caccamo is a large Norman castle in Caccamo, Sicily, built on a steep limestone cliff overlooking the San Leonardo valley and the Rosmarina lake. The white-stone complex has curtain walls with V-shaped battlements, several towers, a courtyard and an internal maze of rooms and stairways; parts collapsed in a 20th-century earthquake and it was later restored and opened to the public.

A massive irregular-plan fortress of white limestone perched on a sheer rocky crag, with continuous curtain walls topped by distinctive V-shaped crenellations and multiple square and rectangular towers rising above the cliffline. The fabric is ashlar and rubble stone in pale tones, the roofline dominated by flat-topped battlemented towers and narrow arched windows. From below the rock face is exposed and vertical; the castle presents a layered silhouette of walls, towers and an inner courtyard set well above the surrounding valley.

The Castello di Caccamo is among the largest and best preserved Norman castles in Sicily, and one of the largest castles in Italy. It is built on a steep cliff 521 metres above sea level, overlooking the San Leonardo river valley and the artificial lake of Rosmarina.
The castle as it stands today was built by Matthew Bonnellus in the 12th century. In 1160 a group of Norman barons met in one of its rooms to plot against William I of Sicily, though the rebellion failed. Descendants of the Dukes of Caccamo inhabited the castle until the Region of Sicily purchased it in October 1963.
