As it stood in 1350
What Castle of Serravalle looked like in its prime.
Perched on the crest of the Serravalle hill above a dense cluster of pastel houses, the castle reads as a compact stone enclosure with continuous curtain walls punctuated by a tall square keep and at least one shorter crenellated tower; inner buildings have low red-tiled roofs. Masonry is rough, warm-grey limestone with mortar courses. Sloping terraces and scrubby vegetation cloak the hillside; a narrow, steep external stairway climbs the slope toward the walls. The place-of-arms is an open courtyard beside the chapel.
Its story
The story of Castle of Serravalle.
The Castle of Serravalle takes its name from the hill overlooking the town of Bosa, in Sardinia's province of Oristano, on which it was built by the ancient Tuscan Malaspina family in the 13th century.
Within its walls, the large place-of-arms contains the small palatine chapel of Our Lady de Sos Regnos Altos, which preserves surviving frescoes; the restored castle still crowns the hilltop above the town.
