Trakai Island Castle
Trakai Island Castle is a red-brick Gothic island castle on Lake Galvė in Trakai, Lithuania, originally begun in the 14th century and completed in its major phases around the early 15th century. After long ruin it was extensively reconstructed in the 1950s–1960s and now houses the Trakai History Museum. The complex comprises a keep, curtain walls, multiple round defensive towers with conical tiled roofs, a gatehouse and a Ducal Palace grouped around an inner yard.

A compact red-brick Gothic island castle set directly on Lake Galvė, with tall round corner towers topped by steep conical orange-tiled roofs and a higher multi-storey rectangular keep with a steep gabled roof; thick curtain walls rest on lighter-coloured stone foundations. A central gatehouse with an arched entrance faces the lake, joined to the island by a low wooden bridge; the Ducal Palace wings sit within the walls around an inner yard with wooden galleries. The island reflects clearly in the lake.

Grand Duke Kęstutis ordered the stone castle begun on the largest of three islands in Lake Galvė in the second half of the 14th century. After his assassination, a power struggle for the grand-ducal title followed between Jogaila and Vytautas the Great, whose major works completed the castle around 1409.
Trakai was one of the main centres of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance; Vytautas died here in 1430 without being crowned King of Lithuania. Rebuilt in the 1950s–1960s on Lithuanian initiative despite resistance from Soviet authorities, it now houses the Trakai History Museum.
